Exploring Baja Mexico

The next trip is planned for February 2008.

Somewhere along the way while riding motorcycles in Baja we decided we should try to ride from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez.   Along the lines of most crazy ideas, we selected an area where no one has done this before.   The area is roughly between San Quitin and San Felipe.   Below are a few bits and pieces of our explorations.

While on the various hikes and rides, a GPS was used to record our routes.   On one hike it became clear it was more important to watch out for rattle snakes on the trail then monitoring the screen of the GPS.

Along with any crazy idea is the justification that someone has done something like this before.   Here is the kind of trail blazing the first Californians did on the way to the San Fernando Valley.   This area is near Placeritas Canyon.   A location nearby is also known for the first gold discovery in California, March 1842.   I'll bet you thought the first gold discovery was in Sutters Mill.

We aren't about to cut through the hills in Baja.   Sooner or later we will find a trail which will allow a motorcycle through.   With about 3 miles left to explore, this goal seems reachable.

Below are two maps of the area we have been exploring.   You can select these thumbnails to view the full size maps.   Roads marked by a red/brown lines are back country roads not listed on the topo maps.   The dark blue lines are various hiking explorations.
